From "I Can't" to "I Can": Cultivating a Growth Mindset After 50

November 25, 20243 min read

Let's talk about something that's been on my mind lately, and I bet it's crossed yours too. It's that nagging little voice that whispers, "I can't" or "It's too late for me now."

You know the one. It pops up when we think about trying something new, stepping outside our comfort zone, or even just daring to dream a little bigger. It's especially loud for us women over 50, isn't it?

We've spent years putting others first, putting our own dreams on the back burner. Now, as our kids spread their wings and the house feels a bit quieter, we're left wondering... what's next? What's possible for us at this stage of life?

Well, I'm here to tell you: A LOT is possible, my friend!

But first, we need to tackle that "I can't" mindset, also known as a "fixed" mindset. It's like a weed in the garden of our potential, choking out the beautiful blooms of growth and possibility.

The Growth Mindset Shift

It's never too late to cultivate a growth mindset. This means believing that you can learn and grow throughout your entire life, no matter your age or past experiences.

Think of it like this: Your brain is like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets. You can learn new skills, develop new talents, and achieve amazing things at any age.

Obstacles & How to Overcome Them

I know it's not always easy. We all face challenges that can make us doubt ourselves. Let's talk about a few common ones and how to tackle them head-on:

The Fear of Failure: Remember that time you tried to learn to knit, but your scarf ended up looking more like a tangled mess? When I first starting making jewelry, I was bad at it. We're talking ugly, not made correctly, breaking easily. I was a mess. But I kept practicing, wasted a lot of clay, but gradually, I got better. It's okay to make mistakes. In fact, it's essential for growth! Embrace the idea that setbacks are opportunities to learn and improve.

The Comparison Trap: It's easy to get caught up scrolling through social media and comparing our lives to others. People post their best moments so we have a tendency to compare our whole lives with others' best. But here's the thing: You're on your own unique journey. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small, and focus on what makes you special.

Those Old, Ingrained Beliefs: Called limiting beliefs, we all have them. "I'm not good with technology," or "I'm too old to start a business." We pick up these limiting beliefs throughout our lives and carry them with us. Sometimes, we don't even realize why or where they came from. You need to challenge these outdated narratives! Replace "I can't" with "I can learn." Believe in your ability to adapt and grow.

Daily Habits for a Growth Mindset

Here are some simple things you can do each day to cultivate that empowering mindset:

  • Gratitude Practice: Start your day by writing down 3 things you're grateful for.

  • Positive Affirmations: Repeat empowering statements like, "I am capable of learning new things" or "My age is an asset, not a limitation."

  • Celebrate Your Wins: No matter how small, acknowledge your accomplishments.

Remember, beautiful friend, your age is not a barrier. It's a testament to the wisdom and resilience you've gained throughout life. Embrace a growth mindset, step outside your comfort zone, and watch your world expand with possibilities!
